Four Rental Law Facts; In a survey we conducted with Hacking Adulthood on accommodation, 45% of survey respondents said that they live with their parents/ nuclear family and 89% said that they wanted to change their current housing situation.

Accommodation is a big issue in Ghana, so we collaborated with Circumspecte, Impact Hub Accra, and other organizations and came up with #StateofAccomodation, a campaign to highlight and discuss accommodation issues and come up with proposed solutions. From the offline discussion we held yesterday, we learned a few surprising facts about rental laws from our panelist from Rent Control. Below are four facts about Rental Law you may or may not be aware of:

  1. The Rent Control Law protects the tenant and the landlord but not the house hunter.
  2. According to the law, landlords can legally ask for 6 months advance payment for rent and no more. Currently, there is a bill in parliament to change rent advancement to one year.
  3. Rent can only be increased three years after the initial rent charge.
  4. Landlords must seek approval from Rent Control before increasing rent.
