A moving checklist makes it all easier

Moving can be an extremely stressful process. There’s always a lot to do and sometimes not enough time to do it all. This is where planning comes in. You did your research already about houses for sale in Accra and Ghana real estate. You’ve found the perfect land for sale in Ghana, you’ve developed it and built your perfect home, or maybe you found a little single room for rent in Accra and you’re excited to live on your own for the first time. A moving checklist is an essential tool for a smooth move. We are recommending a checklist that comes together in 4 different phases. Below are a few tips to make your next move quick and easy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Phase 1: Before your moving day

  • First things first. Set a budget for moving. This is money set aside for your transportation costs, broken furniture or household items that may break during the move and need to be repaired. Your moving budget could also include basic necessities like water and snacks for yourself and whoever is helping you move as well as tips for the truck driver (if there is one) who transports your things.
  •  

  • Start collecting boxes. As part of your pre moving process, start collecting boxes from friends, family and any other people willing to give up their boxes. Don’t wait until the last minute to spend money on boxes. You will find that many people are willing to relieve themselves of unused boxes easily and without much need for convincing.
  •  

  • The next thing to do is to pick your actual moving date. A weekday is actually preferable to a weekend if you want to avoid the traffic and crowds of the weekend. Moving companies also tend to be less busy on weekdays and you are likely to get a better deal with moving services this way.
  •  

  • Make a decision on whether you would prefer to use professional movers or family and friends. You obviously have to pay for the services of professional movers but they have the skilled expertise to ensure that your property is transported safely. This might not be the case with well meaning “helpful” friends and family. If you should choose to use the services of professional movers, they make sure you do the necessary research to get the value for price.
  •  

  • Decluttering is another very important step in the pre-moving process. You don’t have to take every single thing you own with you to your new home. You should separate the items you need from those you no longer need or use and sell or donate the excess to charity. Some of the sold items might even end up reducing your moving costs.
  •  

  • Make a packing schedule and develop a personalized labelling system for all the items you need to take with you. Start with broad categories like the bedroom or kitchen and pack up everything. Use your labels to distinguish rooms or specific types of property from one another. Make sure you give yourself a deadline for each area or room in your house so that you don’t waste all the time in one location.

 Phase 2: Days ahead of the Moving Day

In the days before you move to your new home, you need to check a few things in your moving checklist.

  • Make a closing-up plan. This is the list of activities you need to conclude when leaving your home. This includes fixing any damages or repairs to your old place that need to be done before you leave, returning your keys to your landlord, cleaning up or any other closing requirements specified in your previous tenancy agreement.
  •  

  • Make good use of your friends or the crew that will be helping you move. Designate a group leader or point person who can make decisions on your behalf. This should be a person you trust or a person you are paying who will make good decisions. This will allow you be in one location while your group leader or team leader is in another location finalizing the move.
  •  

  • Check the traffic situation a few days to the move. If this can be done online great, but if not drive from your old place to your new place to see how long the drive actually is. You should time yourself and factor in some traffic and any other potential obstacles.
  •  

  • Make sure you take photos of both the place you are leaving and the place you are moving to. This will serve as prove that you left everything in the same state or repair and order as you met it.
  •  

  • Don’t forget to plan your food and water breaks. You don’t want a tired and hungry crew handling your prized possessions. Use these breaks to confirm that all your activities are working according to your master plan.
  •  

  • Make sure you have the right keys and locks to your new home. Count all your packed boxes and ensure that you’ve taken inventory of everything you’re taking with you on the move. Review your contract with whoever is helping you move if they are being employed for that purpose. Pack up a small bag with all the essentials you might need. This should include you actual checklist, phone chargers, scissors and screwdrivers.
  •  

  • Go to bed early. You’re gonna need the rest!

Phase 3: On Moving Day

  • This is not a day for sleeping in! Set your alarm if necessary and wake up early. It’s going to be a busy day.
  •  

  • Eat well for breakfast. You’re going to need the energy. Consider a lot of protein and some carbs. Pack a bottle of water and try to stay hydrated during the day. Don’t forget your snacks!
  •  

  • Order lunch ahead of time or pack up a lunch box for later. You don’t want to be frazzled and tired looking for a meal later on.
  •  

  • Take out your checklist and any other lists you created in anticipation of the move. Go through it briefly to decide what activity you need to start with.
  •  

  • Relax, welcome your friends or movers and get moving! This is what you’ve been prepping for. You are ready to do this!
  •  

  • When you’ve packed up everything and loaded them into your cars or trucks, go through the house one more time, make sure you’re the last to leave and lock up!

 

Phase 4: After Moving Day

You’ve moved homes. You’re excited and pleased with yourself and that’s great! Go through your checklist one more time to make sure you did everything you needed to do. Take your time unpacking and enjoy your new home!
