One of the affluent neighbourhoods in Accra is Cantonments . It was initially set up to be the military quarters under the British colonial government. Cantonments is one of the oldest neighbourhoods with modern planned residential settlements. Homes found in this neighbourhood are plush with very current architecture. Even older facilities in this neighbourhood have been re-designed to give them a modern look.

Cantonments like Osu, East Legon and Spintex are one of the most expensive places to live in Accra. Residential facilities cost between 600,000 – 950,000 GH cedis.

The Police Hospital in Cantonments established in 1976 for the use of police personnel in most countries but cater for other members of the public in Ghana. The police hospital has been refurbished in recent times to take care of as many people as possible.

Akai House is a privately owned hospital in Cantonments located right opposite the US Embassy. It offers general medical and dental healthcare to people living in the area and it is staffed by general practitioners.

There are a number of educational institutions in Cantonments. One of them is the New Horizon School.  Established in 1972, New Horizon Special School provides vocational training for children with intellectual disability and was founded by Salome Francois.

Another old school at Cantonments is the Ghana International School (GIS) which was established way back in 1955 to provide children with English National Curriculum in Ghana. GIS accepts applications from children between the ages of three to 18 years.  It’s Upper Secondary School offers Cambridge’s IGCSE and GCE.

Morning Star International School was founded in 1965 by the Late Esme Prah Siriboe. The school provides education for pupils from kindergarten to Junior High level. The Morning Star International High School offers IGCSE and A-Level programmes for students who wish to pursue secondary education.

Also located at Cantonments is the Goethe Institut, a cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany that promotes the teaching and learning of the German Language as well as foster international cultural relationships. Apart from promoting the knowledge of the German language, Goethe Institut serves as a venue for very interesting programmes like book readings, photo exhibitions etc. Watch out for the beer parties and their flea market.

The National Film and Television Institut (NAFTI) located very close to the Goethe Institut provides higher education for individuals interested in the study of film and television production. NAFTI was established in 1978 by the Government of Ghana.  A few alumni of NAFTI include Ivan Quashigah and Ernest Quaye Arday.

The Togo and American Embassies are all located in Cantonments. The United States of America Embassy provides Ghanaian citizens with timely information about the US’s news, governance, education, politics, etc. It is located at number 24 circular road. It opens at 7:30 am – 5pm from Mondays to Thursdays and on Fridays it works from 7:30pm -12:30 pm.

Security issues are on the low because of the presence of the Cantonments Police Station. Traffic offenders should also be on guard if they are driving around the Cantonments area because of the heavy presence of the men in black uniform.

There are a number of very good restaurants at Cantonments like Captain Hooks. Captain Hooks is a very popular restaurant which serves seafood and it’s located very close to the Goethe Institut. Le Tandem is a restaurant tilted a little bit towards French menu. It is a very popular choice for diplomats, politicians etc.
