In Ghana, there are a number of unique structures, with amazing designs, located all over the country.

meQasa.com stepped out onto the streets of Accra, to ask people what they consider their favourite architectural designs in the country and why they think these structures should be on our list of the most popular designs in Ghana.

In no particular order, here are the structures that made it onto the list:

1. National Theatre of Ghana

Ghana’s National Theatre, designed by the Chinese architectural firm Taining Cheng & Xianghan Lee and completed in 1992.

This structure is located in Accra Central and has a total size of 11,896 square meters. Shaped like a ship, the National Theatre was built in 1992 and it serves as the venue for many events in Accra.

2. Ghana National Mosque Complex

The Ghana National Mosque Complex is located at Kanda in Accra. The mosque is 33 meters high with a diameter of 19 meters. The ultra-modern mosque has three entrances and four minarets extending up to 61 meters with two balconies.

3. Flagstaff House

Flagstaff (Jubilee) House Ghana

This is the presidential palace and the office of the President of Ghana. The construction of this unique building was overseen by the Indian government and cost 30 million dollars to build.

4. Villagio Apartments

These apartments are some of the most prominent in Accra. Located near the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout, the 27-floor structure is one of the tallest buildings in Ghana. The unique colour combination and design makes the apartment building stand out in Accra’s skyline, thus making the building one of the most popular designs in the country.

5. The Accra Mall

Regarded as one of the most modern structures in West Africa, the Accra Mall is a shopping complex, located on the Spintex Road and was commissioned on the 4th of July, 2008. This structure occupies an area of around 20,000 square metres, housing approximately 65 shops. Popular stores at the Accra Mall include Game, Shoprite, Mango and many more. There are a number of eateries, as well as the Silver Bird Cinema, making the Accra Mall one of the most popular structures, especially among the youth.

6. SSNIT Emporium

SSNIT Emporium

The SSNIT Emporium is a modern, commercial space located at the Airport City. It comprises the main building and the tower, with a total space of 15,482 square meters. The design made the list as a result of its rare architectural style (something akin to a space rocket depending on who you ask) as well as its location.

7. The World Bank Building

It is one of the most popular in the capital because its construction has incorporated a number of eco-friendly designs, like the rainwater harvesting system, green roofing features and other sustainable features.

8. Movenpick Ambassador Hotel 

Movenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, Ghana

This structure is located in the city centre of Accra. The hotel occupies a total land size of 64,750 square meters and has about 260 rooms. The hotel is very visible to anyone commuting to Accra Central, making it one of the most popular in Ghana.

9. Larabanga Mosque

Larabanga Mosque, Ghana

A historic mosque located in Damongo in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region. It is considered to be one of the oldest in Ghana and West Africa. The unique structure was built in the Sudanese architectural style with mud and reed.

10. Unity Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Unity Hall at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Popularly known as the “twin towers” because there are two-storey buildings facing each other, with a basketball court separating them. Unity Hall is an all-male hall with a capacity of about 450 rooms on 9 floors. It is the largest halls of residence in West Africa.
